Ice Worms musical concept by Carmen Braden
Carmen Braden (piano), Lacie Marchand (saxophone), Brandon Maturino (dancer)

This work was featured as a performance at the 2015 Region 9 Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance.  We showcased this work as an example of our exploration into the interdisciplinary of improvisation and sound.  We used a piece composed by Carmen Braden in which we followed the form of her Jazz Chart, inserting a free improvisation section in the middle, and returning to the main theme of the chart for the end.

Improvisation of Sound and Space
by Carmen Braden (piano), Lacie Marchand (saxophone), Brandon Maturino (dancer)

This work was featured on my graduate saxophone recital in 2015.  Along with Carmen and Brandon, the three of us explored ways in which we could connect both physically and aurally with one another through performance.  This led to the development of movement by musicians on stage, and the interaction and reaction of our sounds and movements together.  The musical form of this piece began as a Jazz Chart by Jon McCaslin, "Fort San" in which we used melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material to begin the piece.  This movement and sound quickly transformed to a free improvisation of sound and space.
